WonderCon 2018 Wrap Up

WonderCon 2018 Wrap Up

The 2018 WonderCon took place at the Anaheim Convention Center over the weekend of March 23rd~March 25th, and it was a great way to kick off the "Con Season". Here's some of the highlights from my experience.

Amongst the amazing cosplay, WonderCon had a great line up of panels and presentation including Krypton, Marvel's Cloak and Dagger, Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay, Netflix's Lost In Space, and more. I kicked off my Con weekend with the "Batman Ninja" world premiere Saturday morning. Directed by Junpei Mizusaki, this anime sends Batman and his friends back to Feudal Japan, where the villains rule the divided lands. The animation is absolutely gorgeous and the movie is filled with over-the-top anime tropes that you'll either hate or love. Either way, it's worth checking out. The next panel I went to was the Ready Player One panel. Having seen the movie, I was interested to hear each cast members' experience working on the film. The panel was moderated by Scott Mantz and includes Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cook, Lena Waithe, Ben Mendelsohn, Phillip Zhao, Win Morisaki, Zak Penn, and author of Ready Player One - Ernest Cline. The cast recounts their meeting director Steven Spielberg and the first scene they worked on with him. For Tye Sheridan, it was getting the walk right for his character/avatar Parzival. Sheridan said Spielberg played the song "Staying Alive" before calling action for the actor to start his strut. The cast and crew also discussed their first video game. For Ernest Cline and Ben Mendelsohn, it was Aventure and Pong respectively. Lena Waithe went old school with her choice of Sonic the Hedge Hog while the youngest cast member Phillip Zhao said he plays everything on PC.

The chemistry between the cast was undeniable, and it shows in the movie. Ready Player One hits theaters on March 29th and it's definitely worth checking out.

What I look forward to the most was the Her Universe update panel. Hosted and moderated by Ashley Eckstein, the panel gave us sneak peeks of what's to come from Her Universe and Hot Topic. The newest collection is the Tiki collection, featuring retro designs inspired by Lilo and Stitch, Moana, and Peter Pan. This collection also included bags and shoes. SHOES! I'm currently obsessed with the Lilo and Stitch red heels.

Her Universe is also launching "Our Universe", a activewear collection for the whole family, inspired by lightsabers.

There'll also be an Avengers collection, based on the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War. Each piece is one of the infinity stone - Mind, Time, Soul, Power, Space, and Reality. And there'll be metallic gold jacket to symbolize Thanos' gauntlet. The jacket will be reversible.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of what's to come from Her Universe this year. 2017 Fashion show winners Grace Duval, Lindsay Orndorff, and Rose Ivy have designed a head-to-toe collection inspired by Disney Princesses. The princesses include: Ariel, Jasmine, Tiana, Rapunzel, Moana, and Mulan. We were given a sneak peek at 3 different looks:

These designs are illustrated by Ashley Taylor, who have done many designs for Her Universe. And if this doesn't whet your appetite, can I just say Dinglehopper makeup brushes? Yes! Like I mentioned earlier, this collection will not only include apparel but accessories as well. The Ariel collection includes a pair of holographic shoes! As I sat through the panel, I was already calculating in my head how much I'll need to save up by the time this collection hits stores. A more detail post for the upcoming Disney Princess collection is to come, so make sure you check back to Geek & Glitter for more.
